ORLANDO, Fla. – The New Orleans Privateers came out with stifling defense but a big third quarter run put the game out of reach as they were defeated 72-45 by the UCF Knights at Addition Financial Arena on Monday.
UCF only led by four points at the start of the third quarter but they opened the lead with six three-pointers on the offensive end of the floor and just two turnovers. At the end of the third, UCF was ahead 58-38 and they were able to coast the rest of the way.
The Privateers came out with strong defensive intensity and held their own against the Knights. The Privateer defense held UCF to just 4-of-18 from the field and the Knights did not have a free throw attempt through 10 minutes.
Meanwhile,
Alexis Calderon scored seven points in the opening stanza which included a quick four on a layup, a steal and another layup. The Privateers exited the first quarter leading 13-9.
UCF found their range from the perimeter in the second quarter as they went 5-of-7 from long range. Still, the Privateers kept themselves in it despite falling behind at the 5:21 mark. The Privateers also beat the halftime buzzer when in 3.1 seconds, Calderon drove the length of the floor and found
Patricia Sherrill for a layup.
On the day, the Privateers forced 24 UCF turnovers and had 12 steals.
INSIDE THE BOX
Calderon finished with 11 points and five steals to lead the Privateers in both categories.
Jayla Kimbrough had seven points.
DeArica Pryor finished with three steals.
Nora Francois added six points for the Privateers.
UCF was led by Laila Jewett and Kaitlin Peterson who combined for 39 points and 11 of the team's 12 made triples. Achol Akot finished with a team-high 11 rebounds.

The Privateers will face Tarleton State on Monday, Dec. 18 which will also be the team's Education Day game.
