LAKE CHARLES, La. - Â The University of New Orleans men's basketball program dominated the HCU Huskies 90-69 to advance to the Southland Conference Tournament quarterfinals Sunday night at the Legacy Center.
Jordan Johnson led with 29 points and six assists, his eighth game with 20+ points. With five three-pointers tonight, Johnson passed Bryson Robinson for the most three-pointers made in a single season with 90. Robinson led with 87 made in the 2019-20 season.Â
New Orleans had four in double-figures.
Tyson Jackson put up 14 points and five rebounds.
Jamond Vincent and Omar Henry both had ten points. Vincent recorded his fourth double-double with 14 rebounds.
Johnson buried two from long distance to put the Privateers up 10-2 at 16:39. The Huskies quickly closed the gap and both teams rallied back and forth seeing four ties. Up by four with 5:04 on the clock, Omar Henry put down a massive dunk to spark a 10-5 run to closeout the half 41-33.
To open the second half, Johnson made a layup to extend the New Orleans lead to its largest at 11. The Privateers continued to build on the lead, and Turk Vincent laid down a monster left-handed dunk to put New Orleans up 18. New Orleans closed out the game 90-69.Â
The Privateers shot 56% (36-of-64) from the field and 55% (6-of-11) from long distance. New Orleans also had a season-high 49 rebounds and scored 15 second chance points compared to four on HCU's end.Â
New Orleans will take on Southeastern at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow in the quarterfinals.
