Privateers Fall in 2023 Pelican Cup Finale vs. Tulane

NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers were involved in a back-and-forth battle early but they were limited to one run over the last seven innings of an 8-6 loss against the Tulane Green Wave on Tuesday at Maestri Field.

DECISIONS
Tayler Montiel threw his longest outing of the season, three shutout innings, in what was his first win of the season. Connor Macip took the loss, his first of the year. Gavin Smith earned his first save of the season.

There were 12 runs scored in the first two and a half innings. From then on, it was a display of pitching as both teams were held to just a run each.

New Orleans threatened to tie the game in the sixth as they capitalized on a walk, a hit batter, three wild pitches and a passed ball. However, Brian Valigosky recovered to strike out the next two batters and get the Green Wave out of trouble with a 7-6 lead.

The Green Wave added an insurance run in the seventh when Simon Baumgardt doubled and was driven in by Brennan Lambert's RBI single.

In the eighth, New Orleans loaded the bases with two outs. A double by Max Dias and two walks put the go-ahead run on base. Tyler Bischke hit a line drive to left on the second pitch he saw from Colin Reilly but it found the glove of Brady Hebert in deep left.

New Orleans got the tying run to the plate in the ninth but the last out was recorded on the base paths when Anthony Herron Jr. was caught stealing second.

INSIDE THE BOX
Kasten Furr hit a three-run homer and added his third stolen base in the last four games to a two-hit night. Issac Williams had a hit, two walks and an RBI. Herron went 2-for-5 with a pair of singles. Nine pitchers threw for New Orleans. Nolan Daniel, Zeph Hoffpauir, Connor Handy, Matthew Maldonado and Jacob Mead all threw a scoreless inning.

Tulane had two first inning homers from Brady Marget and Jake LaPrairie. Baumgardt scored twice and the Green Wave lineup drew eight walks on the night.
