LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Bellarmine Knights got out to a fast start in the opening set and established rhythm in their favor as they defeated the New Orleans Privateers 3-0 (25-12, 25-15, 25-21) on Friday afternoon at Knights Hall.
The Knights ran out to a 12-4 advantage in the first set and continued to build upon that. Bellarmine had just one attack error in 31 attempts and hit .419 for the opening set. The Knights also had a pair of service aces in the set.
Karen Cordero Barr earned one of her 12 kills for the match in the middle of the second set that tied the score at 12-12. However, the Knights went on a set-deciding run of eight straight points which was keyed in large part by the service game. Bellarmine had three aces in that stretch.
The third set saw things tighten up significantly throughout as the Privateers used a 6-0 run to vault ahead 13-11. After a timeout, Bellarmine scored on five of the next seven rallies to move ahead in the set.
Another mini spurt late on pushed the Knights to a 22-18 lead. Both teams traded points for the remainder of the set as the Knights took home the straight set win.
