LAKE CHARLES, La. – The New Orleans Privateers took the third set down to the wire but were handed a 3-0 (25-13, 25-13, 25-23) defeat by the McNeese Cowgirls on Saturday afternoon.
It was a tight set early in the first with the Cowgirls leading by two at 8-6. From there, the Cowgirls went on a 7-2 run to extend their lead to seven. The Cowgirls didn't look back from that point as they hit .333 in the opening set and had a 13-9 advantage in the kill department.
The second set began with McNeese establishing an early lead at 11-6. They ended the set on a strong note with seven consecutive points scored, capped by a service ace from Emma Hendricks. McNeese notched six aces as a team in the set.
New Orleans eyeballed McNeese throughout the set and had the lead for a good portion of it. The Privateers led 17-14 but the Cowgirls responded with a stretch of five consecutive points that included two aces from Carissa Chainey.
The Privateers erased the narrow deficit and leveled the score twice at 22-22 and 23-23. However, the Cowgirls got a kill from Tshilanda Diouf to end an extended rally. The Cowgirls got another kill on the next rally to end the match in their favor.
INSIDE THE BOX
Buse Kocakaya led the offense with nine kills.
Karen Cordero Barr added seven kills and
Ryan Williams had five.
Lani Alleman led the way in digs with 12.
Vera Beltrame had 14 assists on the match.
McNeese was led by Kayla Wilson who had 12 kills and seven total blocks (two solo). Chainey finished with six kills.
NEXT UP
The Privateers will head to Hammond to face Southeastern next Tuesday. First serve is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
