THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls Colonels denied the New Orleans Privateers' attempt to extend the match with a late third set rally. Nicholls won 3-0 (25-18, 25-20, 25-23) on Thursday night at Stopher Gym.
A Colonels attack error helped push the Privateer lead to 21-17 but after an Addison Phares kill gave the Colonels service back, they scored on five of the next six rallies to take a 23-22 lead. The two sides traded the next two points and the Colonels had a match point on their service up 24-23.
Tierney Terrell converted their first look at match point with her 16
th kill of the night as the Colonels broke a four-match losing streak against the Privateers.
It was the home side that got out to the fast start with a .469 attack percentage in the opening set. Nicholls raced out to a 6-2 lead but after the Privateers got back on serve,
Ryan Williams helped generate three consecutive points to erase the early deficit.
From there, Nicholls used a 6-1 spurt keyed by two kills and a block assist from Leah Linares Castro. That opened up the Colonel advantage to seven and they saw out the remainder of the set with 19 kills.
New Orleans' service game was a big factor early in the second set. They posted four aces in their first 10 points. The Privateers were leading 14-12 when the key Colonel run came: a five-point spurt which was produced through kills by three different Nicholls players. Once the Colonels got the lead, they never surrendered it for the remainder of the set.
Jordan Gamble contributed nine kills with a .615 attack percentage for Nicholls. Kenley Nonato had 16 digs to lead the defense and Castro had four block assists.
