Resilient Privateers Rally Late in Loss at Texas Tech

LUBBOCK, Texas – The New Orleans Privateers gave Texas Tech everything they could handle but the Red Raiders prevailed by a score of 78-70 on Saturday afternoon in the United Supermarkets Arena.
 
New Orleans put up a tremendous battle against a defense that entered the game top 15 in the nation in scoring defense and blocked shots. After trailing by as many as 18 points, the Privateers went on an early fourth quarter run that trimmed the Texas Tech lead to eight points with just over six minutes left in regulation.
 
New Orleans got as close as within five points with 49 seconds left on the clock, but the Red Raiders were able to hold on to preserve their unblemished record at 6-0.
 
The Privateers got out to a quick start as they took decisive shots early in the clock. Alexis Calderon had six quick points and Brialle Washington came off the bench with seven points in the first quarter to help New Orleans build a 19-12 lead.
 
Texas Tech then went on a 7-0 spurt to tie the game within the next minute of game action. They assumed a 26-21 lead after a high intensity first quarter. New Orleans began the game 9-of-12 from the field but were held without a field goal in seven attempts over the last 2:56 of the first quarter.
 
In the second quarter, Texas Tech's press forced 10 turnovers, but the Privateers continued to battle as they out-rebounded the Red Raiders 15-12. Nora Francois also had a quick four-point spurt before the half, which saw Texas Tech lead by 13 points.
 
Out of the locker room, Jayla Kimbrough had an efficient third quarter. After sitting most of the first half due to early foul trouble, Kimbrough scored 10 points and went 5-of-6 from the field. The Privateers were narrowly outscored in the quarter 17-15 and went to the fourth trailing 63-48.
 
Bailey Maupin led the Red Raiders with 20 points. Texas Tech's leading scorer, Jasmine Shavers scored 12 points but was just 3-of-12 from the field. Jalynn Bristow added 17 points.
 
INSIDE THE BOX
Francois notched her eighth career double-double with 10 points and a career-high 17 rebounds. Kimbrough scored 17 of her team-leading 19 points in the second half. Washington finished with nine points and five rebounds. Calderon had eight points and three assists. Jasmine Jones finished with nine points and five rebounds.
 
NEXT UP
The Privateers head to Lafayette to face the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns on Tuesday. Tip is scheduled for 6 p.m.
