NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers had clutch pitching and patient at-bats late as they broke through for a 4-2 victory over the Georgia State Panthers on a cold, windy Saturday evening at Maestri Field.
Ryan Delorbe pitched three shutout innings of relief for the win. He was first call out of the pen for New Orleans after
Grant Edwards went five innings with one walk and six strikeouts. Delorbe threw 38 pitches and struck out three on the night.
New Orleans scored two runs in the eighth to break a 2-2 tie. The Privateers got two walks and a
Mitchell Sanford single to load the bases with one out. Two batters later,
Issac Williams drew a four-pitch walk that gave the Privateers the lead.
During the at-bat against
Kai Hori, there was a wild pitch that kicked away, that allowed
Miguel Useche to score an insurance run.
Enter
Kyrin Tyson-Long who made his season debut. He struck out Henry Koehler in four pitches. The last two outs were recorded in three pitches combined for the save. Long needed just seven pitches in total for his first save of the year.
The Panthers got on the board first with two runs in the fourth inning. An RBI single by Koehler through the left side made it 1-0. Matt Ruiz scored the second run when he came around from second on a ground ball that never left the infield.
New Orleans got a run back in the bottom of the frame. With two on and one out, an RBI ground out by
Victor Castillo scored Sanford. The Privateers were close to at least tying the game, but
Issac Williams was robbed of a hit by a diving catch from Michael Maginnis in left field.
New Orleans continues to rack up the walks in bunches. They added eight more walks tonight after 10 on Friday.
INSIDE THE BOX
Sanford went 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Castillo and
Maika Niu each had a hit on the night. Edwards, Delorbe and Long combined for 10 strikeouts on the mound.
Koehler, Will Mize and JoJo Jackson each had two hits for the Panthers. Ross Norman went 5.1 innings and allowed two hits and four walks in his collegiate debut.
