CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The New Orleans Privateers held A&M-Corpus Christi leading scorer, Alecia Westbrook to two points but the Islanders shot 54 percent as they defeated the Privateers 81-54 on Thursday at the American Bank Center.
The Privateers and Islanders got out to a defensive start early but the pace picked up toward the middle of the quarter. There was a stretch where both teams combined to score on five consecutive possessions.
At the end of the first, the Islanders held at 23-15 lead. A&M-Corpus Christi shot 56.7 percent while the Privateers connected on 46.7 percent of their shots in the opening ten minutes of play.
The Privateers managed to trim the lead down to five points but that's as close as they got for the remainder of the half. Shortly after a
DeArica Pryor free throw cut the Islander lead to 23-18, the home side went on a 13-0 run. By the half, the Islanders were up 40-23.
Out of the halftime locker room, the Privateers held the Islanders to just four points in the first four minutes of the third quarter. However, in that same stretch New Orleans was held to five points. The Islanders continued to separate for the remainder of the third quarter and the went to the fourth up by 22 points.
INSIDE THE BOX
Alexis Calderon led all Privateers with 12 points and added three steals. Pryor also had double figures with 10 points.
Nora Francois had her streak of double-doubles ended at three. She finished with eight points and six rebounds.
Paige Allen had a double-double with 16 points and 10 boards for the Islanders. Mireia Aguado led all scorers with 18 points. As a team, the Islanders were 9-of-18 from three-point range on the night.
