NEW ORLEANS –
Colton Mercer got out of a first inning jam and the New Orleans Privateers offense scored in bunches early to defeat the Bluefield State Big Blue 13-2 in a run rule on Friday night at Maestri Field.
Mercer, who picked up his fifth win of the season, had to get out of a tough spot in the first inning after the first two batters got on via a double and a single. With the bases loaded and one out, Mercer struck out the next two batters to get out of the inning with no runs allowed. From there, the offense went to work.
Four consecutive doubles from
Victor Castillo,
Diego Villescas,
Mitchell Sanford and
Miguel Useche began the night. The Privateers sent 10 men to the plate against starter, Will Austin and scored six run in the opening frame.
An inning later, Sanford came up with his second extra base hit, a solo homer to right that pushed the score to 7-0.
The fourth inning saw another offensive barrage that plated five runs.
Dalton Hurst had a two-run double which was part of a 3-for-3 night at the plate.
Issac Williams also delivered an RBI triple in the frame.
From there, the Privateers went on cruise control. Mercer struck out six and walked one over five shutout innings.
Elijah Karney got an inning of work out of the pen and struck out a pair of batters.
Bluefield State got on the scoreboard when Tahir Muelens doubled to right field which scored two runs but
Kace Matthews bounced back with two consecutive strikeouts to nail down the Privateers' eighth run rule win of the season.
INSIDE THE BOX
Useche had two doubles on the night, bringing his career total to 45. He passed Chris Avans for ninth place on the all-time doubles list and is now one behind Johnny Giavotella for eighth. Castillo is 6-for-7 in two games since moving to the leadoff spot. Sanford added two RBI and is now at 39 for the season through 33 games.
Colton Roberts and Tyson Mickie combined for five strikeouts over the last two innings on the mound for Bluefield State. Tahraun Hammond had two doubles.
