Privateers Cap Off Sweep of Bluefield State With Run Rule Victory

NEW ORLEANSMitchell Sanford landed a single shy of the cycle and Miguel Useche homered in the eighth to finish the game an inning earlier as the New Orleans Privateers won 11-1 over Bluefield State in their third consecutive run rule.

For the weekend, New Orleans outscored Bluefield State 50-9. Their 10 run rule wins matches the total from 2023.

New Orleans got ahead in the second inning. Victor Castillo delivered a base hit to right that scored Collin Loupe and gave the Privateers an early 1-0 edge. Bluefield State starter, Zach Powell kept the Privateers in the check through the first two innings but New Orleans adjusted in their second turn through the lineup.

That resulted in a five-run eruption in the third inning. Sanford and Alexander Saunier hit home runs in that inning as Powell was unable to finish the frame. There were three more extra base hits that helped vault the Privateer lead to 6-0.

Bryce Calloway got the start on the mound and was efficient as he hit the strike zone early and often. Calloway threw 41 of his 53 pitches for strikes and went four innings. The only blemish was on a Chris Larkin solo home run in the fourth. Calloway struck out three batters in his longest outing of the season.

New Orleans added three more runs in the sixth off Braeden Major. A two-run triple by Sanford was followed by an Useche sac fly that was nearly a home run if not for a catch at the top of the wall by Garret Hladilek.

Sanford doubled to lead off the seventh, then Useche hit his second home run of the season to finish off the run rule victory. It capped off a week where the Privateers hit .432 at the plate and slugged .784 as a team.

INSIDE THE BOX
Caleb Seroski, Jack Williams, Brooks Byers and Tyler Velino all threw scoreless innings in relief. Diego Villescas and Issac Williams each had two hits and a run. Villescas also stole two bases. Castillo finished 3-for-4 with two RBI.

Joseph Pilewski was 2-for-2. Jean Carlos Diaz also added two hits for Bluefield State. Bluefield State had seven strikeouts on the mound.

WE ARE YOUR KREWE
For 54 seasons, Privateer student-athletes have had the unique experience of wearing New Orleans across their chests.  Like the city itself, our sports teams have been fueled by resiliency, grit, and the unquenchable desire to win.  Our city also houses the nation's biggest celebration each year. And much like a Mardi Gras parade krewe, we are tethered to our community through pride, tradition, a culture of acceptance, and finally our commitment to show that New Orleans is a world-class city to live, learn, play and work. We invite you to become more involved with the only University that truly represents New Orleans all day, every day.  Join #NOLAsTeam, We Are Your Krewe!
