NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers saved five match points while threatening to extend the match, but the Lamar Cardinals staved off the charge and won 3-0 (25-17, 25-20, 25-23) on Saturday afternoon at the Human Performance Center.
A run that started with a
Divine Muo kill continued after two unforced Cardinal errors.
Molly Kehoe put down a kill that cut the Lamar lead down to 24-22 and the Privateers scored again on the next rally.
However, off the serve reception of Maja Malinowska, the Cardinals got a kill from Lauren Tishkoff to preserve the straight set victory to move their record to 9-5.
Lamar started the match with a 5-0 run. Three of those five points came on Privateer attack errors. Though New Orleans kept threatening to close the gap, Lamar came up with an answer when needed. The Privateers got as close as within two points on two different occasions for the remainder of the opening set.
New Orleans looked poised to take the second set. A strong service rotation by
Vera Beltrame set the tone for an early 7-3 lead. Lamar came back to assume command 12-9. That's when the Privateers engineered a 9-3 spurt behind two kills and a block from Muo.
Once the Cardinals got back on serve, Taisha Rhone recorded three aces as part of a seven-point run that put the Cardinals ahead for good in the second set and gave them a 2-0 lead in the match.
Lyric Jordan led all hitters for Lamar with 12 kills and had just one error in 30 attempts. Malinowska had eight kills and 11 digs for the Cardinals.
