TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The New Orleans Privateers ended the night by pushing the host Florida A&M Rattlers in the third set but wound up on the short end of a pair of results with 3-0 losses to Florida A&M and Jacksonville on Friday at the Al Lawson Center.
JACKSONVILLE-3 NEW ORLEANS-0
The day started with the Jacksonville Dolphins (2-2) executing a sweep by the score of 25-17, 25-12, 25-10 over the Privateers.
The match opened on level terms when the Dolphins hit their first sizable run of the match. Jacksonville led 10-9 when they went on a 5-0 spurt that included two kills from Breanna McDonough. New Orleans could not get closer than within four points for the remainder of the first set.
At around the same time in the second set, Jacksonville went on their biggest run of the match. The Dolphins led 10-8 and scored the next point on an overturned call via a challenge. Jacksonville scored the next 11 points to put the second set out of reach.
New Orleans got a quick spurt in the third set with a 3-1 lead but the Dolphins responded with 11 straight points. Jacksonville went on to win the match in straight sets and posted 14 service aces on the morning.
Courtney Roundtree and
Chelsea Daffin each had four kills to lead the Privateers' offense. Daffin and
Defne Eciroglu co-led the squad with six digs each.
FLORIDA A&M-3 NEW ORLEANS-0
The Privateers pushed the Rattlers to extra rallies and led for sizable portions of the third set but could not extend the match as they lost 25-11, 25-11, 26-24 to the hosts in the second match of the day.
Florida A&M had 29 kills to just six attack errors over the first two sets and they hit .400 and .350 in the first and second set respectively.
Going to the third set, the Privateers led by as many as seven points when they went ahead 13-6. A balanced offense helped set the stage throughout a set that saw a couple of delays.
Florida A&M rattled off six straight points to take a 20-18 lead but the Privateers came roaring back with back-to-back kills by
Ava Kennon to tie the score at 20-20. The Rattlers scored a crucial point on an overturned call from a challenge to push to a 23-21 advantage.
However, the resilient Privateers saved two set points to tie the score at 24-24. In extra rallies, a kill by Iyonnie Sanford and a service ace from London Hatch sealed the victory for the Rattlers.
Lani Alleman led the Privateers in digs with 13. Daffin finished with eight kills and two service aces.
Jamiryana Hall had three kills, all in the third set. Roundtree finished with four total blocks.
