HOUSTON, Texas – The New Orleans Privateers had a ferocious fourth set comeback that fell just short in a 3-1 (25-20, 19-25, 25-15, 25-23) loss against the HCU Huskies on Tuesday night at Sharp Gym.
New Orleans trailed by as many as eight points when they were behind 19-11.
After
Celia Mbaya registered a kill, she went back to the service line and the Privateers proceeded to score five consecutive points, which included an ace from Mbaya that cut the Huskies lead to 19-17.
HCU got to set point with a 24-21 lead, but the Privateers fought off the first two attempts at match point with an Mbaya kill and an
Alessandra Meoni block. HCU converted on their third opportunity with an Allana Archie kill to finish off the night.
The Privateers started off strong behind three early kills from
Laura Piva to give the road team an early 7-4 advantage. From that point, HCU retook the lead at 9-8 and kept it for the rest of the set though behind a four-kill edge in the set and a .344 attack percentage.
New Orleans established an early lead in the second set and held firm throughout.
Defne Eciroglu had a service rotation that included an ace which built the early lead to 10-6. The Huskies never got closer than within three points for the remainder of the set.
The Privateers hit .414 in the second set with just one error 29 attempts while the Huskies were limited to a .167 attack percentage with 10 errors in 42 attempts.
HCU took the lead back in the match with a third set victory that included a 15-7 advantage in kills. The Huskies got out to a 5-1 lead which included a successful challenge and kept the lead through the remainder of the set to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
Archie finished with a team-high 16 kills for the Huskies while Katy Barger added 15 kills. Peyton Fadal had 54 assists.
INSIDE THE BOX
Ryan Williams finished with a team-high 14 kills and hit .414 on the night. Meoni added 11 kills with a .435 attack percentage.
Vanae Sapp finished with a team-high 16 digs. The Privateers as a team had six blocks on the night.
