NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers took the UIW Cardinals to the wire in the third set but could not push through to extend the match as they lost 3-0 (25-7, 25-7, 25-22) on Saturday at the Human Performance Center.
The Privateers were trailing 12-7 when they got on the service line from a service error.
Kaila Baker was on the service line for the Privateers who proceeded to score the next seven points to take a 15-12 advantage.
UIW responded by going on an 8-2 run to surge back ahead 20-17. The Privateers got back within a point trailing 23-22, but a service error set up the Cardinals with match point. They converted on their first attempt after a Privateer attack error ended matters as the Cardinals pushed their record to 7-3 in Southland play.
The Cardinals hit .417 in the opening set and had 16 kills to the Privateers' six in the opening set. UIW also had a perfect side out percentage and got five kills each from Kyla Malone and Vanessa Eregie.
UIW kept the pressure on early in the second set to gain separation on the scoreboard. After the two teams split the first six rallies of the set evenly, the Cardinals scored on 11 of the next 12 rallies including three kills and a block from Calissa Allison.
Malone had 13 kills and nine digs to lead the Cardinals. Finley Evans finished with nine kills and Kitana Tuufuli had seven.
INTO THE TOP TEN
Defne Eciroglu passed Lucie Pokorna to move into the top ten in program history for career assists and later in the match, passed Shannon Stowell to move into ninth. Eciroglu now has 1,467 career assists after the contest.
INSIDE THE BOX
Courtney Roundtree led the offense with seven kills for the Privateers.
Alessandra Meoni and
Laura Piva each had four kills.
Lani Alleman added a team-high 10 digs. Eciroglu had 12 assists and seven digs.
