Privateers Match Southeastern's Block Total in Loss

NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers matched the Southeastern Lions' block total on the night but could not push through a tight third set in a 3-0 loss (25-15, 25-18, 25-23) on Tuesday at the Human Performance Center.

The Privateers surged ahead 13-9 in the third set as they took advantage of a stretch of three consecutive attack errors by the Lions. Southeastern then responded with eight points in the next ten rallies to take a two-point edge.

A tandem block by Laura Piva and Ava Kennon brought New Orleans back on level terms at 18-18. The score was tied on three separate occasions from that point, but it was the Lions who pushed through to the finish. Carissa Young had a kill that gave the Lions their first look at match point.

That was converted when Ayla Klingenberg had a solo block on the next rally to secure the win for Southeastern.

Southeastern hit .385 in the first set to establish the tone in their favor and they registered 17 kills to just two errors in 39 attempts. Alexis Logarbo, Kyra McKelvey and India Bennett combined for 13 of those kills in the opening set.

New Orleans held the Lions to lower hitting percentages the rest of the match: Southeastern hit at a .250 clip in the second set and were held to a .111 attack percentage in the third set.

Also, the Privateers matched the Lions' block total on the night. Both teams had six rejections for the match. Southeastern came into the match leading the Southland in blocks per set.

INSIDE THE BOX
Piva and Alessandra Meoni each had eight kills on the night. Piva also had 10 digs and was one of three Privateers with double-digit digs. Vanae Sapp had a team-high 12 digs and Lani Alleman had 11 digs. Piva, Kennon and Roundtree were all in on three of the team's six blocks.
