NEW ORLEANS – University of New Orleans sharpshooting senior
Coleton Benson was named Southland Player of the Week on Monday by the conference office.
Last week against a pair of Louisiana rivals — LSU and Tulane — the Austin, Texas, native averaged 21.5 points per game, shot 47.8% from the floor and 52.6% from beyond the arc. He was a perfect 11-of-11 from the free-throw line and is now 15-of-15 this season from the stripe. He also grabbed 3.5 rebounds per game in 63 minutes of action.
Benson was especially sharp against the Green Wave, scoring a career-high 33 points — the most by any Southland student-athlete in a game against a Division I opponent this season. He made eight of his 12 three-point attempts, one shy of a school record, and went 7-of-7 from the free-throw line with a season-high five rebounds.
Coleton's eight three-pointers were one shy of the UNO single game record set by James Parlow in 2007 and equaled by Bryson Robinson in 2019.
He is the first Privateer men's basketball player to earn Southland Player of the Week honors since Jordan Johnson in January 2024. He becomes the 14th Southland Player of the Week in program history and the seventh individual Privateer to receive the award.
