Women's Basketball Falls in Overtime Heartbreaker at UTRGV

EDINBURG, TexasBrialle Washington scored a career-high 26 points and the New Orleans Privateers pushed the UTRGV Vaqueros to overtime, but ultimately fell on the short end of an 87-81 decision on Monday night at the UTRGV Fieldhouse.

In the overtime period, the Privateers struck first through Washington who undercut a pass and drove for a fast break layup. UTRGV quickly got the lead back on a three-pointer by Madison Huhn on the next possession.

Jayla Kimbrough tied the game back up on a floater with 1:02 left, but the Vaqueros countered when Ivy Brown got a second chance bucket and a foul. The Privateers missed an opportunity to tie on their next possession.

Washington's fourth triple cut the Vaqueros lead to 83-81 with six seconds remaining but an intentional foul by the Privateers gave UTRGV two free throws and possession. They were able to hold from there for the final seconds.

The Privateers held the lead most of the way down the stretch after Lauren Banks put the road side ahead with a layup at the 4:22 mark. However, a three-pointer by Gianna Angiolet of the Vaqueros with 22 seconds left tied the game at 72-72.

The two teams traded two free throws inside the final 10 seconds that kept the score level and sent the Privateers to their first overtime contest of the season.

New Orleans surged ahead behind Shanihya Brown who scored a fast break layup off a rebound and got fouled. Five possessions later, Brown got a steal at halfcourt and scored another fast break layup to put the Privateers up 49-45. They led 55-53 at the end of the stanza after a Mariah Hart baseline drive.

The Privateers raced out to an early 10-4 lead as they held the Vaqueros without a field goal for the opening six minutes of the game. UTRGV connected on their first shot from the field at the 3:48 mark of the first quarter.

UTRGV wrestled the lead away by the end of the quarter as they surged ahead 19-17. The Vaqueros used the free throw line to keep themselves in front on the scoreboard. They shot only 28.1 percent from the field but went 16-of-18 from the free throw line. UTRGV led by as many as nine points, but a pair of Brialle Washington free throws and a Mariah Hart layup cut the deficit to 37-32 at the half.
