HAMMOND, La. – The New Orleans Privateers held Southeastern to their second lowest point total in conference play but fell on the short end of a 59-50 decision on Saturday afternoon at the University Center.
The Privateers came out with a fierce start on defense as they limited the Lady Lions to just 21.4 percent (3-of-14) from the field in the opening stanza. Meanwhile, the Privateers scored the last 10 points of the quarter including a buzzer beater second chance layup by
Aaliyah Ellis.
New Orleans led 17-10 after a quarter, but the Lady Lions controlled the action in the second. They improved their field goal percentage to 52.9 in the second quarter paced by their leading scorer. Alexius Horne scored 10 points in the second quarter and the Lady Lions outscored the Privateers by 15 to take a 31-23 lead into the locker room.
The Privateers chipped away at the Lady Lions lead in the third quarter, eventually tying the score at 37-37 on a
Jasmine Jones jumper with 2:08 left. Southeastern responded with six quick points in the final minute of the third quarter.
In total, New Orleans held the Lady Lions to just 34.5 percent from the field and Southeastern hit only three field goals in the fourth quarter. However, Southeastern was able to stave off the Privateers to remain undefeated. New Orleans could not draw closer than within six points in the final stanza.
Horne had 19 points and six rebounds to lead the Lady Lions offense. Jalencia Pierre finished with 11 points and five assists.
INSIDE THE BOX
Jasmine Jones finished with 18 points and hit all three of her three-point attempts.
Alexis Calderon finished with eight points and eight assists.
Nora Francois added seven points, 12 rebounds and four blocks. The Privateers narrowly out-rebounded Southeastern 44-43 and the offensive rebounds were even at 12-12.
