UIW Uses Late Third Quarter Run to Defeat Privateers

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The UIW Cardinals used a big third quarter run to stave off the New Orleans Privateers 71-60 on Thursday night at the McDermott Center.

The Cardinals and Privateers were locked in a tight battle that was tilted slightly to UIW until about halfway through the third quarter. An 11-0 run by the Cardinals, which saw four different players score, extended their lead to 52-37 near the end of the penultimate quarter.

UIW controlled most of the fourth quarter, but the Privateers started to threaten their lead. Jayla Kimbrough hit four consecutive free throws and New Orleans trimmed the Cardinals lead to 61-55. On the next possession though, Jorja Elliott hit a three-pointer that gave UIW the boost they needed to see out the remaining two minutes.

The Privateers opened with a 9-2 run and controlled most of the first quarter as they led by eight with just under two minutes remaining. The Cardinals got four quick points out of a timeout though and closed the gap to 16-14 after a quarter of play.

Shiho Isono led the charge for the Cardinals as they took their first lead of the night on a triple from the Japan native with 1:49 left in the half. Isono went 4-of-6 from three-point range in the first half, and the Cardinals went into the halftime locker room with a 34-31 lead. UIW had a 22-14 advantage on the glass in the first half and had eight second chance points off five offensive rebounds.

Destiny Whitaker led the way for the Cardinals with 20 points and added eight rebounds. Isono finished with 16 points. UIW shot 46.2 percent from the field for the evening.
