MOBILE, Ala. – The bullpen spun 4.2 no-hit innings and the offense exploded late as the New Orleans Privateers overpowered the South Alabama Jaguars 13-2 in eight innings on Tuesday at Stanky Field.
The Privateers put the game well out of reach in a seven-run eighth inning. A walk and two bunt singles set the stage.
Tristan Moore drew a bases loaded walk to make the score 7-2.
Bryce Calloway followed with a two-run single. Then,
Collin Husser and
Matt Gonzalez had back-to-back doubles to drive in three more runs.
The scoring was capped off when true freshman,
Xavier Rivera, who was taking his first collegiate at-bat, lined a single to right. When the dust settled, the score was 13-2.
Sawyer Toney came in and got three outs in 12 pitches to put the finishing touches on the victory.
The win marks the first four-game winning streak over South Alabama since 2008. It's also the first time ever the Privateers had back-to-back run rule victories over the Jaguars.
South Alabama got on the board with two runs in the first, but the Privateers settled in and broke through on the scoreboard in the fourth.
Dalton Hurst's RBI infield single scored Calloway to get the Privateers within a run.
New Orleans first took the lead in the sixth inning. Back-to-back doubles by
Matt Gonzalez and
Karson Evans tied the game. Two successful sacrifice bunts later, Evans scored to give the Privateers a 3-2 lead.
The bullpen, which started with
Skylar Jones who got the win, took over as they silenced the Jaguars bats for the remainder of the game.
Carson Kimball and
Ira Austin also threw scoreless frames in the victory.
INSIDE THE BOX
Calloway and Husser each homered and combined for six RBI. Gonzalez and Hurst also had two RBI each. The Privateers had three sacrifice bunts and two bunt hits on the night. The bullpen allowed just two baserunners (both on walks).
