NACOGDOCHES, Texas –
Collin Loupe hit his first career home run and the New Orleans Privateers scored the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth inning of a 3-2 win over the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks on Friday at Pilgrim's Park.
Loupe hit his first career home run on a deep drive to left field after getting ahead 1-0 in the count against Stephen F. Austin starter, Cody Templeton. That gave the Privateers an early lead but the Lumberjacks answered back with a run in the third then took their first lead in the fourth on an RBI single by Dalton Mullins.
The Privateers between
Grant Edwards and
Cole Syversen kept the difference at one run and the Privateers turned two double plays in the sixth and seventh inning.
Then New Orleans broke through to tie the game in the eighth.
Jahlani Rogers drove a pitch deep into the gap off of Templeton that scored Loupe from first base to square up the game at 2-2. Then
Ira Austin came on with two outs in the eighth and after issuing a walk to load the bases, he induced a flyout to left from Julian Swift.
The Privateers were able to wait out the Lumberjack pen in the ninth to get in front.
Justin Best was hit by a pitch to start the inning. Three walks later, the last drawn by Loupe, the Privateers got ahead 3-2.
Coach
Dax Norris then called upon
Bryce Calloway for his second save opportunity of the season. The senior retried the side in order and the Privateers won their Southland opener for the fifth time in the last seven seasons.
Austin got the win while Blane Zeplin was tagged with the loss. The save for Calloway was his second of the year.
Edwards went six innings and struck out seven while allowing two runs on four hits in a no-decision.
