Matt Gonzalez Racks Up Five Hits, Six RBI as Privateers Defeat UIW

SAN ANTONIO, TexasMatt Gonzalez posted the first five-hit game by a Privateer since 2019 as New Orleans got out to a big early lead and won 18-9 over the UIW Cardinals on Friday at Sullivan Field.

On a blistering day, Gonzalez and the Privateer offense got started early. His first of five hits was a double that put two runners in scoring position. Bryan Loriga then hit a double that scored both runs. A Bryce Calloway RBI single made it three on the board before the Cardinals could bat.

Gonzalez came up an inning later and hit a grand slam to right center that pushed the Privateer lead to 7-0. In all, the Privateers collected 12 hits against Josh Salinas in 3.1 innings. It was the most hits Salinas gave up in a collegiate outing.

The Cardinals tried to battle back as they got the first two runs on the board on a Jake Weaver bases loaded walk and an RBI infield single by Tyler Cowan. The Privateers came back with three more runs in the fourth to answer, which included doubles by Loriga and Tristan Moore.

UIW put up four runs in the bottom of the fourth, but the Privateers came right back with six of their own in the fifth. In that frame, Bryce Calloway hit his seventh home run of the season.

From there, Sawyer Toney took over and shut out the Cardinals over the last four innings to earn his first save of the season. Aiden Torrez also picked up his first collegiate win.
