SAN ANTONIO, Texas –
Matt Gonzalez had another huge day to lead the offensive barrage as the New Orleans Privateers finished the sweep over the UIW Cardinals with a 12-6 victory on Sunday at Sullivan Field.
The Privateers got out of a jam in the bottom of the second when
Matthew Bienvenu induced a double play ball off the bat of Daniel Calabrese. The score was tied 2-2 at that point.
New Orleans seized momentum from there with a five-run third inning.
Karson Evans reached on a fielder's choice that allowed a run to score, which gave the Privateers the lead. Then Gonzalez came up three batters later with the bases loaded and parked his second grand slam of the weekend to open the lead to 7-2.
The visiting Privateers continued to pour it on as they scored four more in the fifth. Gonzalez and
Bryce Calloway each had solo homers over the next two innings and the Privateers led 12-2 at one point.
UIW stayed out of the run rule when they scored in the bottom of the fifth. The Cardinals then added three in the eighth, but
Zach Longshore came in and got the next two batters out on seven pitches to squash any chance of the Cardinals further cutting into the Privateer lead.
The sweep is the first road conference sweep for the Privateers since Mar. 22-24, 2024 at Nicholls.
Gonzalez wound up with 10 hits including three homers and three doubles. He also drove in 11 runs to lead the potent Privateer offense.
