NEW ORLEANS – Both starting pitchers spun a gem, and a solo home run in the fourth inning was the difference as the Northwestern State Demons defeated the New Orleans Privateers 1-0 on Friday night at Maestri Field.

Grant Edwards was masterful, tying his longest outing with 8.0 innings pitched. He also set a new career high in strikeouts with 11 and struck out the side twice in the sixth and eighth inning.

However, it was Dylan Marionneaux who won the night with a complete game two-hit shutout for his second win of the season. Marionneaux threw 102 pitches and struck out nine batters.

Neither team could move the needle early as Edwards needed 12 pitches to get out of the opening frame while Marionneaux needed only nine. The two teams were limited to a combined seven hits.

Rocco Gump hit a solo home run on the first pitch of the at-bat to give the Demons the lead. Edwards got out of the inning two batters later when he struck out Balin Valentine.

From there, Edwards got into a bases loaded situation with two outs but he induced a ground ball that was handled by
Bryan Loriga. The subsequent throw to first to get out of the inning marked one of seven assists by Loriga on the night.

Tristan Moore had the closest call of the night when he blistered a ball at 108 miles per hour off the bat that hit the wall in right field in the fifth inning.

Ira Austin came in the ninth inning and after allowing the first two to reach base, he got a bunt pop out and struck out the next two batters.

INSIDE THE BOX
Edwards threw 109 pitches and 75 went for strikes. It was the second time he set a new career-high in strikeouts this season. Austin worked his seventh consecutive scoreless relief outing.
Collin Husser had the other hit for the Privateers, a single in the second inning.
