Privateers Score Three Runs in the Eighth to Surge Past Northwestern State

NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers came through with a three-run eighth as they rallied from a small deficit to defeat the Northwestern State Demons 3-1 on Saturday afternoon at Maestri Field.

The Privateers entered the bottom of the eighth trailing 1-0 against Demons starter, Tyler Bryan. The rally started when Collin Loupe punched a single into right. Matt Gonzalez followed with being hit by a pitch.

The Demons went to the pen for the first time this weekend and Carter White came out. After a wild pitch advanced Loupe and pinch runner, Payton Boines into scoring position, Bryan Loriga delivered a two-run double to give the Privateers the lead.

New Orleans added another run on a White wild pitch.

With the lead in hand, Bryce Calloway came on to shut the door and retired the side in order. A ground out to Loriga ended matters as Calloway picked up his Southland leading fifth save of the year.

The Privateers made it a theme as they got out of troublesome spots throughout the day. It started in the first inning when Skylar Jones induced a first inning ending double play with the bases loaded. Jones went four innings and struck out seven batters.

Carson Kimball threw 1.2 scoreless frames then Sawyer Toney came in to finish off the sixth with a three-pitch strikeout of Braden Benton that left the bases loaded for Northwestern State.

Cole Syversen, who picked up the win, came on with two men on and one out. He got Rocco Gump to ground into a fielder's choice and Benton to ground out to second. The Demons left 15 runners on base.

INSIDE THE BOX
The pitching staff combined for just three hits allowed while notching another 13 strikeouts. That brings their strikeout total to 26 for the weekend. Loriga had two hits. Tristan Moore hit a double off the wall in the second inning. Jahlani Rogers and Loupe each had a hit.
