Austin, Calloway Preserve Win After Early Offensive Splurge as Privateers Top Tulane

NEW ORLEANSIra Austin held the Tulane Green Wave down and Bryce Calloway shut the door as the New Orleans Privateers won 7-6 in the first game of the 2025 Pelican Cup on Tuesday at Maestri Field.

Austin walked the first batter he faced to move the tying run into scoring position, but got Jackson Linn to strike out to end the top of the fifth and keep the Privateers in front. Including that strikeout, Austin retired 11 straight batters.

After a Jason Wachs single and an ensuing wild pitch, Calloway was called upon for his sixth save of the year. He induced a fly out off the bat of Michael Lombardi. Then after falling behind 3-0 in the count, he got Gavin Schulz to ground out to first two batters later to secure the victory.

It was a game New Orleans (13-10) dominated early behind a solid outing from starter, Hayden O'Dell and three home runs. Bryan Loriga had two of those homers and drove in four runs in the span of two innings.

Calloway also hit his 10th homer of the year and Tristan Moore had a two-run double to help the Privateers build a 7-1 lead heading into the fifth.

That's when Tulane (17-8) started to rally to narrow the gap. Schulz walked with the bases loaded to trim the lead to 7-2. Then Tanner Chun two batters later with a grand slam that cut the Privateer lead down to one, but the resilient Privateers held the lead. Since 2016, the Privateers are 9-3 against Tulane at Maestri Field.

The win went to Austin who is now 2-0. The loss was taken by Henry Shuffler (0-1). Wes Burton threw three shutout innings with seven strikeouts for the Green Wave.

O'Dell had his longest outing of the season at 4.1 innings.

INSIDE THE BOX
Loriga had two homers and four RBI on the night. Calloway finished 2-for-3 with a homer and two runs scored. He has now surpassed his home run total from 2024. Alexander Saunier reached base three times and scored twice. Diego Villescas went 1-for-4 with a run.
