Two Home Runs Back Strong Start From Edwards in Win Over Southeastern

NEW ORLEANS – Two early home runs backed a fantastic start by Grant Edwards as the New Orleans Privateers defeated the Southeastern Lions 4-1 on Friday night in the series opener at Maestri Field.

Matt Gonzalez started off the scoring when he blasted a solo home run off Brennan Stuprich to give the Privateers the lead. After a double by Bryan Loriga and a walk drawn by Bryce Calloway, the Privateers (14-10, 7-6 SLC) got another home run when Collin Husser cleared the fence in left field to extend the New Orleans lead to 4-0.

Edwards took over with another stellar start as he held the Lions (20-6, 7-3 SLC) to two hits over seven strong innings of work. He got out of some tough spots in the third and fourth inning during his outing.

With the bases loaded and one out, Edwards got ahead of Ryan Brome 0-2 in the count and got him to ground into a double play. In the fourth, Edwards had two on with one out and he retired the next two batters to keep the Lions off the scoreboard.

He struck out eight batters and picked up his first win of the season.

Bryce Calloway took over and recorded the last six outs for his seventh save of the season. With runners on second and third and one out, Calloway struck out TJ Salvaggio and Conner O'Neal to get the Privateers out of the frame. He retired the side in order in the ninth and threw 20 of his 27 pitches for strikes.

The Privateers also drew five walks from Stuprich, a season high from the fifth year senior who took his first loss of the year.

INSIDE THE BOX
Calloway drew three free passes at the plate on top of his two scoreless innings on the mound. The Privateers limited Southeastern to three hits on the night. The only run scored on a Ben Robichaux solo homer in the seventh.
