NEW ORLEANS – The Southeastern Lions used a late surge to break open a close game and defeat the New Orleans Privateers 17-5 in eight innings to take the Pontchartrain Bowl on Sunday at Maestri Field.
The Privateers spent five innings rallying after Southeastern took an early 3-0 lead in the first. New Orleans got back on level terms on a
Bryan Loriga sacrifice fly in the fifth inning.
Southeastern then surged back ahead in the sixth. After the first three men reached, a balk was called, allowing the go-ahead run to score. A Dane Watts single drove in two more to give the Lions a 6-3 advantage.
The Privateers got a run across in the bottom of the sixth when a
Marco Mueses sacrifice fly scored
Tristan Moore to get New Orleans back within two runs.
Southeastern put the game out of reach in the seventh inning though as they plated seven runs. Only one hit came in the inning, a two-run single by Peyton Woods. The rest of the runs were scored through a combination of three walks, two hit batters and two errors.
The Lions added four more in the eighth to put the run rule into motion. The win signals the first time Southeastern has secured the Pontchartrain Bowl since 2022. It was also their first series win at Maestri Field since 2017.
Bailyn Sorensen went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI. Jude Hall finished 2-for-4 with a homer and three runs scored. Blake Lobell got the win after going five innings and striking out five while allowing four runs.
INSIDE THE BOX
Moore homered twice and scored three times.
Matt Gonzalez and
Dalton Hurst each had a double.
Zach Longshore kept the Lions scoreless from the second through the fifth inning and struck out nine.
