NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers weathered an early surge by the Jackson State Tigers and pulled away late to a 16-10 win on Wednesday night at Maestri Field.
In a game that featured a lot of early scoring, the Privateers settled things down on the mound as they allowed one run over the last four innings. With New Orleans leading 10-9,
Canaan Clayton made his season debut.
He allowed a leadoff triple, but bounced back to retire the next three batters in order on two ground outs and a strikeout. The final out of the frame was a soft comebacker that Clayton took himself and flipped to first.
New Orleans took that and turned it into two runs at the plate in the bottom of the sixth. After the bases were loaded on a walk and two singles,
Bryce Calloway scored on a wild pitch. Then
Payton Boines followed with a sac fly to center to extend the lead to 12-9.
New Orleans put the game out of reach an inning later. After a scoreless inning thrown by
Aiden Torrez in the top half, the Privateers notched four runs off the long ball. Calloway hit his sixth of the year and
Adrian Dominguez followed with his first of the season.
The Privateers first took the lead in the bottom of the second.
Dalton Hurst doubled to bring in two runs and
Alexander Saunier hit a towering homer to right to account for four of the Privateers' runs in that inning, which gave them a 7-5 lead.
On a night where a lot of pitchers threw by design (nine in all),
Myles Green picked up the win which was his first decision as a Privateer.
Sawyer Toney and
Ira Austin also threw scoreless frames on the night.
The win moved New Orleans to 44-7 against Jackson State all-time at home.
Pierre Cabral went 3-for-6 for the Tigers. Jordan McCladdie and Joseph Eichelberger combined for three hits and five RBI.
INSIDE THE BOX
Calloway went 3-for-4 and was a triple shy of the cycle while driving in five runs. Hurst had two hits, three walks, two RBI and three runs scored. Saunier went 3-for-6 and drove in three runs.
Anthony Ruiz and
Marco Mueses each had a hit in their first start of the season.
Payton Boines drew two walks in his first start of the year.
