NEW ORLEANS –
Grant Edwards struck out 10 batters over six innings, but the UTRGV Vaqueros staged a late rally to defeat the New Orleans Privateers 10-5 on Friday night at Maestri Field.
Edwards scattered nine hits and got strikeouts in critical junctures early in the contest to set the tone on the mound for the Privateers. He left the game with a 5-1 lead after surpassing the nine strikeouts he threw against Boston College this season and in a start against UIW in 2024. Edwards threw 106 pitches on the evening.
From there, UTRGV started to rally back as they erased the Privateer lead in the seventh. Hank Warren came up with the big hit in the inning when he tripled to right to bring home a pair of runners that tied the game at 5-5.
The Vaqueros moved ahead in the eighth inning when Isaac Lopez hit the second Vaquero of the game, a leadoff solo shot. UTRGV had 18 hits on the night including nine in the last three innings.
New Orleans struck first for two runs in the third inning when
Tristan Moore doubled to left to bring home a pair of runs with two outs. The Privateers eventually chased starter, Angelo Cabral from the game after 3.1 innings.
Diego Villescas, in his return to the lineup, doubled to left to bring in the first of two runs in the fourth.
Matt Gonzalez followed with a sac fly later in the frame. The Privateers got their lead up to 5-0 when
Karson Evans reached across the plate on a 1-2 pitch and singled to right.
The win went to Wyatt Wiatrek (2-0).
Sawyer Toney (1-1) took the loss. Wiatrek threw 4.0 innings and struck out five while allowing three hits, three walks and a run.
Lopez was a triple shy of the cycle for the Vaqueros. Warren also had three hits and two RBI.
INSIDE THE BOX
Alexander Saunier paced the Privateer offense with three hits and a walk in five plate appearances. Moore and Evans each had two hits.
Collin Loupe was 1-for-3 with a triple, a walk and a run. Gonzalez went 1-for-4 with an RBI and a run.
