Rogers Hits Two Homers But UTRGV Wins to Take Series

NEW ORLEANSJahlani Rogers hit two home runs, but the UTRGV Vaqueros raced to an early lead and won 14-8 over the New Orleans Privateers on Saturday afternoon at Maestri Field to clinch the series victory.

The Vaqueros scored seven runs in the second inning to put the Privateers in a sizable early deficit. The first three men reached base ahead of Rene Galvan who doubled to drive in a pair of runs. Isaac Lopez also had a two-run double in the inning as UTRGV sent 12 men to the plate.

UTRGV added two more runs in the third to extend their lead to 9-0. There were four walks and a hit batter in the frame.

New Orleans got on the board in the fourth inning. Bryce Calloway singled and Bryan Loriga drew a walk to set the stage for Rogers who hit his first long ball in a Privateer uniform, which cut the deficit to 9-3. UTRGV starter, Victor Loa walked Karson Evans but retired the next two batters to get out of further trouble.

The Vaqueros extended their lead to nine again as Easton Moomau homered in the fifth and two more runs scored in the sixth. The game held there until the eighth inning when the Privateers drove in three runs.

Two of them came off a Diego Villescas single that got through the left side and the other scored when Matt Gonzalez was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Jack Lopez came on for UTRGV and got a ground out to end the frame and keep the Vaqueros ahead by six.

Rogers hit his second homer on a line drive to left field in the ninth inning. It was the third multi-homer game by a Privateer this season.

Loa picked up the win to move to 3-1 on the season. He allowed three runs in five innings of work. Zach Longshore took the loss.
