Privateers Plate 15 Runs, Defeat UNC-Asheville to Open Series

NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers scored three runs in the first inning and posted 15 hits on the night as they defeated the UNC-Asheville Bulldogs 15-1 in the series opener on Friday at Maestri Field.

The Privateers (17-15) got it going early. Bryan Loriga doubled to put two men in scoring position. What followed were RBI hits by Bryce Calloway and Tristan Moore that helped get the Privateers out to a quick start.

New Orleans starter, Grant Edwards threw up a couple of scoreless frames to start, but the Bulldogs (11-21) got a run in the third. Patrick Gillen singled to bring in Logan Lowe and cut the Privateer lead to 3-1 in the third.

The Privateers responded with two runs in their half of the inning though. Adrian Dominguez, who had three RBI on the night, drew a walk with the bases loaded that chased Bulldogs starter, Tony Lopez from the game.

In the fourth, New Orleans opened up serious distance on their advantage keyed by a Moore home run that drove in three. That homer gave Moore 28 career homers as a Privateer, tying him for ninth in program history with Stuart Weidie and Issac Williams.

The game was turned over to the bullpen after the fourth inning. Carson Kimball, Sawyer Toney and Brooks Byers each threw a scoreless inning and the three pitchers combined to throw 71 percent of their pitches for strikes.

New Orleans added five more runs in the sixth inning to shut it down. Collin Loupe and Diego Villescas each had an RBI single and all nine Privateer starters finished the night with a hit.

INSIDE THE BOX
Calloway and Moore combined for seven RBI on the night. Collin Husser had two hits including a double and scored twice. Karson Evans went 2-for-4 with a run. Villescas and Alexander Saunier combined for four runs scored.
