NEW ORLEANS –
Zach Longshore was brilliant for five shutout innings and
Bryce Calloway picked up his eighth save of the year as the New Orleans Privateers (19-15) held off the UNC-Asheville Bulldogs 3-2 on Sunday at Maestri Field.
The Bulldogs (11-23) got the tying and go-ahead runs on base in the ninth inning. However, Calloway induced a pair of ground balls that ended the game. The first was handled by
Aiden Torrez who had two assists in the ninth inning. The final out was recorded when
Collin Loupe ranged to his left on a ground ball, which helped put the finishing touches on a 4-0 week.
Longshore set the tone by exemplifying pinpoint command. He threw 71 pitches and struck out 11 batters while only allowing one hit and one walk. The strikeout total was the most for Longshore this season and tied the most by a Privateer in 2025 (
Grant Edwards-11 vs. Northwestern State).
Meanwhile, the offense broke through in the fourth inning against Bulldogs starter, Garrett Crum. After Crum threw just 37 pitches in the first three innings, the Privateers made him throw 31 in the fourth.
Marco Mueses had a one-out single and Calloway followed with a base hit of his own. That set up
Collin Husser who singles through the left side on a 2-2 pitch to bring in both runs and give the Privateers the lead.
Calloway extended that advantage to three when he singled on a 3-2 pitch with two outs in the sixth inning.
The Bulldogs pulled within a run after scoring two in the eighth. Corbin Lanowitz drove in the first run with a sac fly and Rylen Stockton followed with a two-out single up the middle.
For the week, Privateer pitchers limited opponents to a .202 batting average and had 37 strikeouts to 13 walks. Offensively, New Orleans hit .336 in that span with nine doubles and 38 runs.
INSIDE THE BOX
Matthew Bienvenu and
Tyler Velino each had a scoreless inning. Calloway went 2-for-4 and raised his batting average to .415.
Diego Villescas and
Marco Mueses each had a hit and a run scored.
