NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers brought the Pelican Cup back to the Lakefront after a fast start led the way in a 10-5 win over the Tulane Green Wave on Tuesday at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.
The Privateers (20-15) wasted no time in putting the pressure on the Green Wave. A leadoff double by
Matt Gonzalez was followed by three straight walks that set a six-run inning into motion.
A
Tristan Moore sac fly and a
Collin Husser RBI single put the Privateers up 3-0. Then,
Jake D'Altrui doubled the lead before the Green Wave had a turn at bat as he parked a three-run homer, his second of the season.
The Green Wave (23-15) got two runs back in the bottom of the first when Michael Lombardi hit a bloop double to right that scored Connor Rasmussen and Gavin Schulz, but that's as close as Tulane got for the remainder of the night.
Hayden O'Dell gave four innings on the mound while the Privateer offense continued to put in work early. They scored in three of the first four innings including a three-run third that was capped by a Gonzalez two-run single with the bases loaded.
The combination of
Sawyer Toney,
Ira Austin and
Carson Kimball shut down the game by throwing the last 4.2 innings. They combined for five strikeouts to just one walk.
The win brings the Pelican Cup back to the Lakefront for the fourth time since the trophy returned in 2018. New Orleans will go for their first season sweep over Tulane since 2019 on May 6.
