Privateers Shake Off Early Deficit, Top HCU in Series Opener

NEW ORLEANSGrant Edwards battled through six innings and the New Orleans Privateers put up a six-run second inning to overcome an early deficit on their way to a 10-5 win over the HCU Huskies on Thursday night at Maestri Field.

The Huskies (22-14, 14-5) got out to a 4-0 lead after a two-out RBI single in the top of the first and a three-run homer from Rhett Hendricks in the second. From there, the Privateers (21-15, 8-11) took over and asserted command.

Tristan Moore set things into motion with a leadoff single. He eventually came around to score on a wild pitch and ensuing error. RBI singles from Matt Gonzalez and Alexander Saunier that cut the gap to 4-3.

Then Bryan Loriga came up and hit a 1-2 pitch over the left field wall just out of the reach of Jack Walker for a three-run homer that put the Privateers up 6-4.

HCU got a run back in the fourth to close the gap to one, but that was countered by Gonzalez who homered to left-center as part of a three-hit night while batting in the leadoff spot.

Edwards (3-2) retired six of his last seven batters and he wound up with seven strikeouts on the evening.

The Privateers gained some more distance on their lead in the fifth with a three-run inning. Adrian Dominguez came off the bench and drilled a two-run double to the gap. Gonzalez followed with an RBI single to extend the lead to 10-5.

Carson Kimball took over from there and threw two scoreless innings with four strikeouts. Sawyer Toney pitched the ninth and retired the side in order as he struck out Parker Edwards to finish the job on the Privateers' sixth straight win.
