Late Surge By #22 Southern Miss Turns Away Resilient Privateers

HATTIESBURG, Miss.Bryce Calloway homered in the first inning and the New Orleans Privateers pushed the #22 Southern Miss Golden Eagles to the end but fell short 9-4 on Tuesday night at Pete Taylor Park.

Calloway's 13th home run of the season was a 413-foot shot to center that put the Privateers on the board first with a 2-0 lead. That advantage held until the Golden Eagles surged in front with three runs in the third.

A two-run single by Carson Paetow was a big part of the frame that put the Golden Eagles ahead, a lead they added a run to with a run scoring on one of two double plays the Privateers turned.

The Privateers rallied to tie the score in the sixth. Collin Loupe dropped a single to shallow right and was brought in when Matt Gonzalez singled back up the middle. Bryan Loriga then jumped on the first pitch from Camden Sunstrom that tied the score at 4-4.

Southern Miss (32-13) delivered the shot that put them ahead for good in the seventh. A two-out error extended the frame. After a walk drawn by Ozzie Pratt, the order turned over to Jake Cook who hit a three-run homer to give the Golden Eagles a 7-4 lead in the ninth.

From there, Colby Allen collected the last six outs for his ninth save of the season. He struck out two batters in his time on the hill. The Golden Eagles scored two in the eighth to seal the victory.

Pratt went 3-for-3 with two walks and two runs while Cook, Paetow and Nick Monistere each had two hits. Kros Sivley picked up the win in relief to go to 4-1.

INSIDE THE BOX
Jake D'Altrui went 2-for-4 with a pair of singles. Calloway's homer also gave him two RBI to run his season total to 51. Alexander Saunier went 1-for-3 with two runs. Sawyer Toney had two strikeouts to get out of a bases loaded jam in the sixth. Carson Kimball threw 1.1 scoreless innings.
