Calloway Homers Twice, Picks Up Save as Privateers Beat Southeastern in First Round of Southland Tournament

HAMMOND, La. – Bryce Calloway hit two home runs and picked up his ninth save of the year as the New Orleans Privateers took the lead early and kept it in a 10-6 win over the 1-seed Southeastern Lions.

With the win, the Privateers will face Northwestern State on Friday in the winner's bracket.

Calloway got the offense going as he hit a high fly ball that landed well behind Cole Stromboe. In the time it took to go back and dig the ball out of the left field corner, Matt Gonzalez scored and Calloway motored home for the first inside-the-park home run by a Privateer this season. Alexander Saunier had the most recent such homer in May 2024.

New Orleans added another run to the lead in the second to make it 4-0 against Southland Pitcher of the Year, Brennan Stuprich. The Lions cracked the scoreboard though with a two-run homer by Ben Robichaux in their half of the second.

Calloway added more to a complete night as he was the first of back-to-back homers off Stuprich in the fifth. Tristan Moore followed with a solo blast, marking his 30th career homer which ties him for seventh in program history. It was also the eighth time the Privateers hit back-to-back home runs.

New Orleans opened up major distance on their lead with a four-run seventh all with two outs. Adrian Dominguez had a pinch hit single and Gonzalez singled to bring in two runs as the Privateers grew their lead to 10-3.

The Lions brought the tying run on deck, but Calloway came on and got Parker Coley to fly out to right-center, preserving the second win over a 1-seed by the Privateers in the opening round of the tournament since joining the Southland.

Zach Longshore, who came on in relief early, picked up the win after limiting the Lions to one run over three innings. He, Ira Austin and Carson Kimball each had three strikeouts on the night.

INSIDE THE BOX
Calloway finished 2-for-4 with two home runs and three RBI as he ran his season homer total to 16. Bryan Loriga finished 3-for-5 on the night. Collin Loupe had a hit and two walks while Karson Evans added a hit and two runs scored. Saunier had four putouts in center including the final out of the night.
