NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers ended a pulsating second game with a walk-off on an error as the Privateers scored a 3-2 win over the Nicholls Colonels on Senior Day at Maestri Field.
The Colonels picked up a 7-2 win in the resumption of the suspended game earlier in the day.
GAME TWO
The Privateers had several key defensive plays that made a difference in a one-run game.
In the eighth inning,
Bryce Calloway had the bases loaded against him and no outs. He got out of the frame which included Calloway fielding his position as he got an assist on a force out at the plate when the Colonels attempted to bunt the go-ahead run home.
Another couple of big plays came in the ninth inning.
Tristan Moore had an outfield assist to throw out AJ Cappell who looked to stretch a single into a double.
Bryan Loriga charged a ball and made a bare hand grab and throw to first for the third out of the inning.
That set the stage for the Privateers to walk it off. Calloway and
Tristan Moore had back-to-back singles to start the inning. After the Colonels intentionally walked Loriga to load the bases,
Collin Husser put the ball in play on a check swing. Cappell could not field the ball cleanly and Calloway scored the winning run to break the Privateers' six-game losing streak.
The Privateers got a strong performance from
Zach Longshore who went six innings and struck out eight batters. New Orleans grabbed the lead in the fourth when
Diego Villescas doubled and was brought home by a
Dalton Hurst infield single.
Nicholls took the lead in the sixth on an Aaron Biediger two-run double, but the Privateers came right back as Husser hit a line drive homer to left in the seventh.
The win ensured the Privateers remain two games ahead of Nicholls and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in the standings.
GAME ONE
Nicholls picked up a win in the game that was suspended on Friday night. Jaden Collura went after the first pitch and hit a line drive single that scored two runs. Biediger drove in another run then Carter Jenkins hit his first homer of the season to extend the Colonels' lead to 5-1.
The Privateers threatened a rally in the eighth as three consecutive walks drawn by Moore, Loriga and
Jahlani Rogers brought in a run to make it 5-2.
With the tying run on base, the Colonels turned to Cole Simoneaux who got a strikeout to end the Privateer threat.
Nicholls went on to score two in the ninth to put the finishing touches on their series opening win as Jenkins hit a double into the right-center gap that extended the lead to 7-2.
Harper Jordan picked up the win in relief after going 3.2 innings and allowing just one hit. Collura and Jenkins combined for five of the Colonels' 10 hits.
Ira Austin struck out five batters over three innings of relief.
