Two-Out Ninth Inning Rally Falls Just Short in Loss to Islanders

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The New Orleans Privateers saw a two-out ninth inning rally fall just short as they lost the series opener 4-2 to the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders on Friday at Chapman Field.

The Privateers loaded the bases with two outs. Marco Mueses came off the bench and had a pinch hit line drive single. Matt Gonzalez followed with his fourth hit of the night that got the tying run on base.

Diego Villescas then worked a walk against Matthew Molina to load the bases for Bryce Calloway. Molina fell behind 1-0 and after a mound visit, threw a pitch that Calloway drove to deep center. Drake Kerr caught the ball in front of the wall, narrowly preserving the Islanders' victory and keeping them level with Nicholls for eighth place in the Southland standings.

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi got on the board first with three runs in the second inning. Logan Vaughan doubled in two runs and Cade Sanchez also had an RBI double to give the Islanders a 3-0 lead.

Gage Burdick threw a season-high five innings and kept the Privateers off the scoreboard in that time frame for his fourth win of the season.

Meanwhile, Grant Edwards needed just 40 pitches to get through the next four innings. He struck out seven batters over six innings of work and ran his season strikeout total to 91.

The Privateers got on the board when a two-out error scored Villescas. An inning later, Gonzalez came through with an RBI single that scored Alexander Saunier. The Islanders got a run back on their lead from a seventh inning sac fly by Vaughan.

INSIDE THE BOX
Gonzalez went 4-for-4 and added a walk. Saunier drew two of the team's five walks on the night. Calloway, Mueses, Bryan Loriga and Collin Husser each had a hit. Carson Kimball threw a scoreless eighth inning in just 10 pitches.

NEXT UP
The series continues with an adjusted start time of 6 p.m. because of the air show featuring the Blue Angels taking place in the afternoon.
