NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers suffered their first home loss of the season as they were defeated 3-1 (25-17, 22-25, 25-18, 25-18) by the Alabama A&M Bulldogs on Saturday night at the Human Performance Center.
The Bulldogs' block was a key factor as they notched nine rejections to the Privateers' three. Five of those came in the first set as the Bulldogs built a 16-8 lead in the opening set and led by as many as 10 points late in the set.
New Orleans began the second set with a fierce pace as they connected for kills on their first six attempts of the set. The Privateers built a 19-11 lead but had to stave off a late Bulldogs run that cut their advantage to one point.
From ahead 23-22,
Laura Piva scored a kill and an attack error on the Bulldogs finished the second set in New Orleans' favor.
Alabama A&M had four players reach double figures in kills led by Fatima Ramirez who had a double-double with 17 kills and 10 digs. The Bulldogs had statistically their most efficient set in the third when they hit .419 with 16 kills to just three errors in 31 attempts.
The Bulldogs used a 6-1 run to finish off the fourth set and the match for a 2-1 weekend in the Southland-SWAC Challenge. Caitlin Shaw had two of her 11 kills for the night in that final stretch.
