Three Privateers Score in Double Figures in Loss to Nicholls

NEW ORLEANS – The Nicholls Colonels used a big fourth quarter to break open a close game and defeat the New Orleans Privateers 79-64 on Saturday afternoon at the Lakefront Arena.
 
In the final quarter and leading by only one, Nicholls took what was a close game throughout the afternoon and opened it up as they outscored New Orleans 17-6 in the first six minutes of the quarter. The Colonels had nine points at the free throw line in that stretch.
 
After trailing most of the game, the Privateers battled to tie the score in the third quarter at 54-54 after Jayla Owen made two free throws with 3:17 remaining. The rest of the quarter passed with only three combined points and Nicholls held a one-point edge heading to the fourth.
 
The Colonels raced out to an early 10-2 lead and controlled most of the action through the first 10 minutes of play. Nicholls had an advantage of 11 points with 2:47 left in the first after a Jesslynn Jalomo three.
 
New Orleans started to rally back with strong ball movement. The Privateers went on a 7-0 spurt in the middle of the second quarter to cut the Nicholls lead to 32-30. The Privateers got within one point after a pull-up jumper by Jayla Kimbrough with 3:07 left in the half, but Nicholls remained in front for the rest of the half and held a 41-35 lead into the locker room.
 
Four Colonels scored in double figures led by Anyra Wilson's 15 points. Tanita Swift and Sh'Diamond McKnight each had 13 points.
 
INSIDE THE BOX
Lauren Banks finished with 15 points to lead the Privateers in scoring. She also added seven rebounds. Kimbrough finished with 14 points and eight rebounds. Brialle Washington added 13 points.
 
NEXT UP
The Privateers will face Lamar on Thursday, Jan. 15 at Lakefront Arena.
