NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers were outscored by 12 points in the third quarter as the Lamar Cardinals pulled away to a 72-56 win on Thursday night at Lakefront Arena.
Both teams traded the lead in the early stages as there were three lead changes in the first quarter. The Privateers got the first points of the game off a turnover when
Hailee Brennen converted a layup.
New Orleans shot 45.5 percent and made 5-of-11 field goals in the first quarter but the Cardinals held a narrow 15-14 lead. The second quarter was close throughout but the Privateers never got ahead in that stanza. Still they kept it within one possession until Jacei Denley hit a jumper as the horn sounded to give Lamar a five-point lead going into the locker room.
The Cardinals used that momentum to expand on their lead in the third quarter where they put the game away. Lamar outscored the Privateers 20-8 in the quarter as 15 of those points came from Shaila Forman. New Orleans was held to just 3-of-9 from the field and entered the fourth quarter trailing 51-34.
New Orleans had their highest scoring quarter in the fourth with 22 points and shot 52 percent but the Cardinals countered with 21 points of their own over the last 10 minutes of the game.
Forman finished with 18 points for the game and was one of three Cardinals in double figures. Lamar forced 25 turnovers and was plus 10 in turnover margin on the game.

Jayla Kimbrough finished with team highs in points (14) and rebounds (7).
Shanihya Brown and
Brialle Washington each added nine points. The Privateers had a 39-37 edge on the boards. The Privateers also had a season high in blocks as a team with six.
