THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls Colonels used a second quarter surge to defeat the New Orleans Privateers 67-49 on Thursday night at Stopher Gym and complete the season sweep.
The Colonels jumped out to an early 15-7 lead, but the Privateers clawed their way back by scoring the next seven points in the opening quarter. The first 10 minutes ended with Nicholls holding a narrow 20-18 lead.
After
Jayla Kimbrough tied the score early in the second quarter with two free throws, the Colonels used another run to gain some separation on the scoreboard once again. Nicholls went on an 11-2 run as five different players scored to give Nicholls a 29-20 lead.
Nicholls went to the half leading 35-24. They held a 26-17 edge on the glass after 20 minutes and held the Privateers to 28.1 percent from the field.
The Colonels continued their charge in the early stages of the third quarter as they came out of the locker room on a 9-3 spurt, which extended their lead to 17 points by the third quarter media timeout.
Nicholls had 16 second chance points and finished with a 49-37 advantage on the boards. Marie Kenembeni scored 20 points to lead the Colonels. Emani Burks had 10 points and 10 rebounds.
INSIDE THE BOX
Brialle Washington scored 13 points to lead the Privateers. Kimbrough and
Sharon Smith each had eight points.
Shanihya Brown finished with five points, four rebounds and six assists.
NEXT UP
The Privateers head to Lake Charles to face McNeese. The game time has been moved up to 12 p.m. because of the impending winter storm.
