Women's Basketball Outlasts UIW, Four Privateers Score in Double Figures

SAN ANTONIO, TexasLauren Banks converted a three-point play with 24 seconds left and the New Orleans Privateers outlasted the UIW Cardinals 77-73 on Thursday night at the McDermott Center.
 
Banks caught a pass from Mariah Hart and scored a layup from close range while getting fouled by Jorja Elliott. Banks hit the free throw to put the Privateers up by two and New Orleans survived three missed field goal attempts and two missed free throws on the Cardinals' last possession.
 
Brialle Washington grabbed the rebound off a second missed free throw by Brynn Lusby and was fouled in the final seconds. Washington stepped to the line and hit both free throws to seal the victory for the Privateers.
 
New Orleans found themselves trailing by two at halftime. The Privateers shot 47 percent from the field compared to the Cardinals' 33 percent, but UIW made up the difference with six three-pointers made to the Privateers' one. UIW also had five more points at the charity stripe in the opening 20 minutes.
 
UIW expanded their lead to nine points early in the third quarter, but the Privateers slowly clawed their way back. Jayla Kimbrough hit a layup that tied the game at 50-50 with 1:15 left. The Privateers got back in front on a three-point play from Washington on the first possession of the fourth quarter.
 
From there, New Orleans held the lead for most of the remainder of the game. The Privateer bench outscored the UIW bench 48-18 on the night and New Orleans had a 48-28 advantage on points in the paint.
 
Elliott finished with 29 points to lead the Cardinals. Madison Cockrell also scored in double figures with 10 points.
 
INSIDE THE BOX
Four Privateers scored in double figures led by Washington's 17 points. Hart finished with a career-high 15 points. Banks added 11 points and seven rebounds. Kimbrough scored 10 points. Hailee Brennen added eight points.
 
NEXT UP
