Privateers Rally in Middle Innings, Fall in Season Opener to Georgia State

ATLANTA, Ga. – The New Orleans Privateers surged in front in the fifth inning, but Georgia State grabbed the lead for good an inning later as they defeated the Privateers 10-6 on opening night at the GSU Baseball Complex.
 
The Privateers trailed 4-0 heading into the fifth inning when they started their rally to take the lead. Miles Curley ripped a double that scored Carson Hepworth from first to get New Orleans on the board. Dylan Biddick then followed with a two-run homer to further cut the deficit.
 
After Kruise Newman drew a walk with two outs to continue the inning, Karson Evans singled through the right side which brought in the tying run. Kareh Valentin's second hit of the day, a double down the right field line put New Orleans in front 5-4.
 
It remained that way until the sixth inning when Wesley Bass led off with a solo homer to tie the score at 5-5. Four batters later, Wills Maginnis gave the Panthers the lead again with a sac fly RBI. Georgia State added on two more runs to their newfound lead with two outs.
 
The Panthers extended their lead further in the seventh inning on RBI singles by John Beverly and Hunter Carlson. New Orleans got a run back in the ninth, but the Panthers saw out the rest of the game behind 2.1 innings of work from Will Bartkoski who got the save. Bartkoski struck out four and walked two on the night.
 
In their regular season debut, the Privateers had 10 hits and drew seven walks.
 
Michael Caruso got the win for Georgia State. He threw 2.2 innings in relief and had four strikeouts Caruso allowed two runs on four hits. The loss went to Jack Garvey.
 
INSIDE THE BOX
Biddick, Valentin and Evan Rogers had two hits each. Curley went 1-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Biddick also drew two walks. Carter Freeland had an RBI single in his only at-bat in the ninth inning.
 
NEXT UP
The series will finish on Saturday with a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
