BATON ROUGE, La. – The New Orleans Privateers hit three home runs as a unit and asserted themselves early on in a 14-5 victory over the Southern Jaguars on Wednesday at Lee Hines Field. The win is the first Division I victory for Head Coach
Andrew Gipson.
The Privateers got the scoring started early with a four-run second inning. New Orleans took advantage of three walks and a hit by pitch in the inning to set the stage. Walks to
Collin Loupe and
Evan Rogers with the bases loaded brought in two runs to give the Privateers the early lead.
Then,
Miles Curley hit a ball through the left side of the infield which set the stage for a four-RBI night. Curley plated two runs and extended the Privateer lead to 4-0.
From there, the Privateers put up crooked numbers in each of the next two frames.
Karson Evans hit a two-run homer in the third inning. Then
Kruise Newman blasted his first home run as a Privateer in the fourth as part of a three-run frame.
When the dust settled, New Orleans held a 9-2 lead after four innings and kept on cruise control throughout.
The Jaguars got two runs back in the seventh inning to draw closer, but the Privateer offense exploded for a five-run eighth inning to put the game well out of reach.
Owen Smith hit a three-run homer as part of the frame to push the lead to double digits.
Nine pitchers threw an inning each for the Privateers with
Rex Henderson closing it out. He induced a ground ball to Loupe to put the finishing touches on a game where he,
Jack Garvey,
Gus Rogers,
Brice Deaton and
Brock Hill each threw scoreless innings.
