ULM Takes Lead in Fifth Inning, Defeats Privateers to Close Maestri Classic

NEW ORLEANSKruise Newman hit a home run for the second consecutive night to put the New Orleans Privateers ahead early, but ULM took the lead in the fifth inning and pulled away in the back half of the game to a 9-1 decision on Sunday at Maestri Field.

Newman's solo homer was his third of the year on a windy afternoon as the ball pushed toward the foul pole but stayed fair to give New Orleans a 1-0 lead.

From there, the defense had two double plays early in the game behind starter, Reid Leonard and the Privateers held the lead until the fifth inning. That's when ULM moved ahead after a single and an error set the stage early.

Davis Mauzy hit a two-run triple into the right field corner and Micah Dean followed with an RBI single to put the Warhawks ahead 3-1.

ULM added three more runs in the sixth off just one hit, an infield single by Bryce Blaser. That stretched the Warhawks advantage to 6-1. They put up three more runs in the eighth to close out the scoring. Holden Hess came on in relief and pitched the last three innings to pick up the save.

With the Warhawks' win, the all-time series is now 31-30 in favor of the Privateers. The two teams will meet in Monroe in March.

JC Dermody scattered eight hits over six innings and struck out seven to pick up the win for ULM. Mauzy had three RBI and two runs. Jake Haggard went 3-for-5 with two RBI and Bryce Blaser had two hits with an RBI.

INSIDE THE BOX
Skylar Jones made his season debut and had a sharp inning of relief with two strikeouts and just nine pitches thrown. Eli Tidwell had another multi-hit game as he went 2-for-5. Newman finished 2-for-4 and the Privateers had 10 hits as a team.
