Five Pitchers Combine for Shutout as Privateers Defeat Southern

NEW ORLEANS – Five pitchers combined to throw a five-hit shutout as the New Orleans Privateers blanked the Southern Jaguars 4-0 on Wednesday night at Maestri Field. The shutout was the first for the Privateers since April of 2023.

Skylar Jones got the ball to start and got out of a first inning jam. After allowing the first two men to reach on a hit by pitch and a walk, Jones struck out the next two batters. An infield single loaded the bases, but Jones got out of the inning by getting a ground ball fielder's choice.

The Privateers got on the board in the bottom of the first inning when Owen Smith parked the first of two home runs on the night, a solo blast to center on a 3-1 count to give New Orleans an early lead.

Jones threw two innings and struck out two batters to pick up the win for the Privateers.

Tyler Velino and Logan Waldschmidt held the Jaguars without a hit over the next four innings while the offense continued to steadily gain some distance on their lead. That included taking advantage of two Jaguars errors.

In the fifth, the Privateers got another homer off the bat of Eli Tidwell when he parked one to the left of the batter's eye. His second long ball of the year gave the Privateers a 4-0 advantage.

From there, Jack Garvey put up two more scoreless innings and that set up Brice Deaton for the ninth. A hit by pitch and a walk got the tying run on deck, but Deaton bounced back by striking out the next three batters.

The win was the ninth straight for New Orleans in the series history and the first shutout against the Jaguars since 2017.
