NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers got the tying run to third base in the ninth inning, but a late push fell short in a 6-5 loss to the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks on Friday night at Maestri Field.
The Privateers were down three runs heading into the bottom of the eighth, but strung together a single, walk and hit by pitch to load the bases.
Eli Tidwell came up against Kadin Munson and delivered a two-run single on the first pitch to cut the Lumberjacks lead to one.
After
Brycen Smith got through the top of the ninth with no runs allowed, the Privateers had one more shot at it with the heart of the order due up.
Dylan Biddick started it off by hitting a double to deep left off Adrian Rubio. Two batters later,
Adrian Dominguez sent a ball to deep right that fell just short at the warning track, but Biddick advanced to third. Then Rubio induced a ground ball off the bat of
Karson Evans that notched the final out of the night and the Lumberjacks' eighth win of the season.
New Orleans led in the first inning after a three-run frame off starter, Cody Templeton. The Privateers loaded the bases with no outs and got the first run in at the cost of a double play. Still going in the inning though, Dominguez and Evans had back-to-back RBI singles that pushed the early lead to 3-0.
Stephen F. Austin came back to tie it in the fourth with runs scoring on a passed ball and a wild pitch.
The Lumberjacks surged ahead when Julian Swift hit a triple deep in the right-center gap that scored a pair of runs. Mark Henning followed with a single up the middle on the first pitch he saw to push the SFA lead to 6-3.
Stephen F. Austin collected 14 hits on the night and Templeton overcame a rocky start to post five consecutive shutout innings and pick up his second win of the year. The loss went to
Riley Marcotte.

Tidwell reached base four times with two hits and two walks. Dominguez, Biddick and Evans also had two hits each.
